Drainage and environmental evolution across the Permo–Triassic boundary in the south‐east Germanic Basin (north‐east Bavaria)

The identification of the factors triggering continental environmental changes at Permian–Triassic transition is general interest as they allow a better understanding most controversial mass extinction Phanerozoic. Studies from this area are scarce, and its evolution poorly understood. work integrates high-resolution core-logging quantitative sedimentary petrography Middle Permian–Early Triassic recovered wells Obernsees-1 Lindau-1. sedimentological investigation reveals major vertical variations depositional settings marked by grain-size trends facies associations: (i) progradation flow/fluvial fans over sandflat environments denotes Guadalupian–Lopingian; (ii) sabkha shallow-marine conditions occur during uppermost Permian; (iii) onset braided fluvial sequences marks boundary; (iv) style, reflecting increased river sinuosity, aeolian deposition characterize remaining Triassic. Environmental accentuated sediment composition. Proximal deposits (for example, alluvial fan) lithic arkoses, while more distal associations reveal arkosic Detrital modes point to: high-grade metamorphic source feeding drainage Lindau-1 (metamorphic index, MI 441–500); mixed low-grade (MI 277–395) Permian Obernsees-1, passing upward 441–500) subordinate granitoid sources.
